Our First SEason

Deep Ocean Robotics started the 2018-2019 season completely new to MATE. Some of our members had experience in other forms of robotics such as FLL, FTC, and other miscellaneous organizations, though none of us knew how to begin as an underwater robotics team. Most of us did not know each other, and so the challenge before us was great: we somehow needed to form a cohesive and successful team from a group of inexperienced strangers who were not supported by a school club and the regular attendance that comes with being scheduled as a class. However, we pulled through, and with many challenges and learning experiences, we were prepared for our first competition- the Texas Regional Competition at the San Jacinto Maritime Technology and Training Center. We had intended our first year to be a learning year, and it definitely was one (in defining our first year as our "Learning Year," we meant that we would attend the competition with no expectation of being a seriously competitive team). During the tournament, we had several technical difficulties, so we decided that we would fix our robot and work on improving it while waiting for the  the next season to begin. Thus nobody could have been as surprised as we were when our team was announced the second-place winner and one of the two teams that would go on to represent our state in the International Competition in Tennessee! Because of all of the experiences we have faced during our past seasons in both MATE and FTC, we are now a group of friends with two working robots, new goals, and a lot of laughs. We are sad that this is our final season and are grateful for all the opportunities our experiences have granted.
